Maybe leave auto refresh disabled by default, and make the user manually change that if they choose to. If you're going to go the manual refresh route, then click once to refresh all timelines would be the way to go. When I refresh now, I always refresh all four (Replies, FTL, Hot Topic, and DM's) at the same time. That's four things to click on. It would be much more convenient to click one time to refresh everything. But ideally, I believe you should keep the auto refresh if you can find a way to reduce the load on the server.
